Polarization microvariability of BL Lac objects ⋆
نویسنده
چکیده
We present the results of a systematic observational campaign designed to search for microvariability in the optical polarization of BL Lac objects. We have observed a sample formed by 8 X-ray-selected and 10 radio-selected sources, looking for rapid changes in both the degree of linear polarization and the corresponding polarization angle. The whole campaign was carried out along the last three years, and most of the objects were observed at least on two consecutive nights. The statistical properties of both classes of BL Lac objects are compared, and some general conclusions on the nature of the phenomenon are drawn. In general, radio selected sources seem to display higher duty cycles for polarimetric microvariability and, on average, they have a stronger polarization.

Highly Polarized Optically-selected Bl Lacertae Objects
Observations of candidate BL Lacertae objects spectroscopically selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) reveal a large fraction with high polarization (P > 3%). This result confirms that synchrotron radiation makes an important contribution to the observed optical continuum for most objects in the sample. The SDSS sample can be divided into separate categories, with objects of undeter...
متن کاملMulticolor photopolarimetric observation of 15 - min variability in S 5 0716 + 714
We present the result of near-infrared and optical observations of the BL Lac object S5 0716+714 carried out by the KANATA telescope (Uemura et al. 2008 in these proceedings). S5 0716+714 has both a long term violent variability and a short-term variability. The shortest time-scale variability, so-called microvariability, provides a clue of the minimum size of the emitting region. Here, we repo...
متن کاملPolarization and beaming effect for BL Lacertae objects
We derive a relation between the observed polarization and beaming factor (Doppler factor) and compare this relation with the observed data for BL Lac objects. Our results indicate that the high optical polarization is correlated to the beaming effect and the difference in polarizations between Xray selected (XBLs) and radio selected (RBLs) BL Lac objects is due to the difference in their beami...
متن کاملOptical Polarization of 52 Radio-Loud QSOs and BL Lac Objects
Polarization measurements are presented for 52 radio-loud QSOs and BL Lac objects. For 9 highly polarized (p> 3%) AGN, these are the first published polarization measurements. Of these 9, 7 are highly-polarized QSOs (HPQs), one is a BL Lac object and another is a likely BL Lac object. Polarization variability is confirmed for some of these new and previously known highly-polarized AGN. While 6 ...

Received ; accepted – 2 – ABSTRACT In this paper: 1. The assumption of the dependence of Doppler factor on the emission frequency (δ ν ≈ δ 1+ 1 8 log ν νo O , Fan et al. 1993) is used to explain the observational differences between the radio-selected BL Lac objects(RBLs) and the X-Ray-Selected BL Lac objects (XBLs): a) Hubble relation; b) different multiwavelength correlations; c) different re...
